Chase Freedom Flex®: Earn More Cash Back

Earn across rotating categories, travel, dining and drugstores with no annual fee.

By: Alicia

The Chase Freedom Flex® combines rotating bonus categories with fixed cash back rates for several types of everyday spending.

Cardholders earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in quarterly bonus categories they activate, plus 5% through Chase Travel℠.

The card also earns 3% on dining and drugstores and 1% on other purchases. It has a $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fees.

Know the Benefits

Chase Freedom Flex® offers several ways to earn cash back without charging an annual fee. New cardmembers can also access an introductory APR period, subject to the current terms.
  • 5% quarterly cash back: Earn 5% on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in activated quarterly bonus categories.
  • Additional fixed rewards: Earn 5% through Chase Travel℠ and 3% on dining and drugstores.
  • No annual fee: The card has a $0 annual fee and currently charges no foreign transaction fees.
  • Introductory APR: Receive 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers. Transfer fees apply.

Understand the Drawbacks

The highest cash back rate requires more attention than a flat-rate rewards card. Quarterly categories must be activated, and the bonus rate has a spending limit.
  • Activation is required: Quarterly categories must be activated by the applicable deadline to receive the 5% cash back rate.
  • The quarterly bonus is capped: The 5% rate applies to the first $1,500 in combined purchases in activated categories each quarter.
  • The introductory APR ends: After 15 months, the current variable APR is 18.24%–27.74%. Balance transfer fees also apply.

Is Chase Freedom Flex® a Good Fit?

Chase Freedom Flex® combines 5% rotating quarterly categories with fixed rewards on Chase Travel℠, dining and drugstores. The $0 annual fee can also reduce the ongoing cost of keeping the account.

The tradeoff is that maximizing rewards requires activating categories and monitoring the $1,500 quarterly spending limit. Applicants should also consider the variable APR that applies after the introductory 15-month period ends.
